Pretty much anybody who has a web page with a minimum of porno can be in association with Amazon.com. Amazon gets low cost advertising and the page owner gets a kickback (or whatever it is called) on books that are purchased by anyone "clicking through " their page. In this case though Amazon's payments will go to Dane County Humane Society.
The prices are current as of the time I set the links up, but may change, and though Amazon is a reputable business, it may not be the least expensive. If you want to compare prices copy and paste the ISBN number after each book into BEST BOOK BUYS, making sure you search by ISBN and not the default, which is title. As an aditional feature shipping charges, which are sometimes steep, are  included in the comparisons.
If you are buying more than one book on the list below from Amazon, you can increase your the contributions from 5% to 15% on the purchase of the additional books by clicking on your browser's back button which brings you back here, and then clicking through again for your next purchase. Complicated isn't it?
The book reports (aka reviews) that I wrote are based on whichever out of date edition I happen to have and therefor may be misguided. If you have comments you want add, email me at dan@cycleworks.net and I will be thrilled to include them. Those books without prices are not readily available from Amazon, but may be from one of its competitors, check at Best Book Buys.
Well, here it is 21 December 1999. I put up this page around 27 January 1999 and so far $102.34 is working its way toward the Humane Society, on total sales of $1010. By the by, every time someone clicks on something here Amazon tells me about it (not your name though), talk about big brother. What I want to know is which one of you bought Almost A Woman sending 48 cents on its way to buy kitty crunchies or bow-wow chow? Sarcasm aside, thank you for going through here to do it, and thanks to the people who came through this page and bought the following: Boricuas : Influential Puerto Rican Writings-An Anthology   Down These Mean Streets   How to Restore & Maintain Your Vespa Motorscooter   Puerto Rico Mio : Four Decades of Change   So Far from God : A Novel   Spanish Complete Course (Living Language Complete Courses. Compact Disc Edition) Sportbiking: The Real World (The Advanced Riders Handbook)   Bsa : The Complete Story (Crowood Motoclassics)   Pumping Station Design

How to Restore Your Bmw Motorcycle Twins 1950-1969 (Amazon price $23.96) Roland M. Slabon  / Published 1994.      Roland is a dear fellow who has done yeoman service for years as editor of the BMW Vintage Bulletin,  while putting up with the occasional internecine squabbling among vintage aficionados. I suppose if I say anything nasty about his book in his next edition he'll remove the three or four mentions he makes of my tools, but this is a well researched book with a wealth of pictures and only a few insignificant errors such as "magneto keyed to the camshaft" when in fact there is no key. All in all an excellent background book for someone doing a  restoration. 0879389338

BMW 500 and 600cc Twins 1955 1969 (Amazon price: $28.95) Clymer/ Reissued 1990      This is one awful book. Lots of important stuff left out, minimal pictures. Your typical after market shop manual. They would have done much better to plagiarize the non copyrighted BMW FACTORY  SHOP MANUAL as I did. 0892872241

BMW Twins : All Bmw Flat Twins, 1955-1985, Restoration : The Essential Guide to the  Renovation, Restoration and Development History of Bmw Flat Twins (Amazon price $31.96) Mick Walker / Published 1992 1855321912

Bmw R-Series 1970-1994  (Amazon price $37.80) Clymer / Published 1994      I have a pretty fair collection of older after market shop manuals (Chilton, Haynes, Clymers etc.) and the typical one is a pale comparison to a factory manual. This one is an exception, they wrote their own text for a change and took lots of pictures themselves. After Intertec Publishing bought Clymer Publications and came out with this much improved edition, it is a close call as to whether this or the factory manual is better. For the novice I would tend toward this one  0892876247

Haynes BMW Twins Motorcycles Owners Workshop Manual/1970-1996  (Amazon price $12.57) Jerry Churchill, et al  / Published 1998      Haynes, being British, takes a different tack than Clymers to the repair process, almost as if they are rooting you on and encouraging  you to have a whack at it. There is a littlte more detail of common procedures here and a little less on uncommon ones.  If I had to choose one it would be the Clymers because it tends to cover more, but there are also good hints in Haynes, and $12.57 (as of 18 Jan 00) is a great price1859602835

BMW K-Series 1985 1995 (Amazon price $31.96) Clymer Staff /  Published 1996   My opinion of this one pretty much parallels my view of  BMW R-Series 1970-1994  above. 0892876484

The Art of the Motorcycle (Amazon price $45.00 Hardcover) Thomas Krens  Editor 1998  So my mom went to the Guggenheim Museum to see these motorcycles at my urging, but the line was too long so she left, but she bought me a copy of this book. It has a picture or two of each bike and some text. I started by flipping through the pictures, and glancing at the text, but I became sucked in and wound up reading about each bike carefully. Turns out to be a great bathroom book, no plot, read about a few bikes each time. My favorite is the Imme, single sided front fork and the single sided rear swing arm acting as the exhaust pipe as well. The engine and transmission one egg shaped unit with continuous fining. The sort of economy and effective design I strive for. Good book, shitty index. (hard cover 0810969122 ).

The Illustrated BMW Motorcycle Buyer's Guide  (Amazon price$14.36) Stefan Knittel, Roland Slabon / Published 1996  is the first book Roland wrote, co-authored with Stefan Knittel. The book has plenty of nice pictures of the various models, but the most mentionable thing is the rating system (2 through 5 stars, I guess no BMW deserves 1 star). They rate the 500cc R50 equal to the R50s and R69, but prices in ads don't bear that out. Good overview of the bikes with some discussion of concurrent happenings at the factory . 0760300828

BMW R69 & R69S   Roy Harper   0854293876 After a lot of effort I got my hands on a copy (two actually) of this one, and boy what a disappointment. Old Roy took some pictures of a couple of his buddies' well used bikes, several of which are R60 models, and even includes a close up of the incorrect later style fuel petcock. The text? Well he goes to the effort of recycling a couple magazine reviews and interviewing his buddies on how they like their bikes. On top of it all one of the copies I have has no color pictures of  BMW's but 18 of a Sunbeam. Shame on Roy and especially Haynes Publishing Group for printing this nonsense, I see why they let it go out of print. If after all that anyone wants to buy the copy with the Sunbeam pictures, email me, it is yours for $29.
